green and white pattern baby blanket

The Bennington Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

The Bennington Baby Blanket is so much fun to knit and has great texture.  New parents these days seem to like green and cream together, for both boys and girls, have you noticed that?

The blanket is knit in 5 sections, using different charts to make different designs.  Knits and purls are the only stitches used, and it is a good introduction to knitting with charts.

Yarn

For this project I chose Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in sage and cream.  I used almost 2 skeins of the sage and maybe a quarter skein of the cream.  I like using this acrylic yarn because it machine washes and dries, getting softer every time.  I think new parents enjoy the ease of caring for this baby blanket.

Abbreviations:

MC (Main Color) is Sage

Needles

Knitpicks Interchangeable Options Rainbow Wood Needles

These needles are simply gorgeous.  Made of beautiful laminated birch wood, the Rainbow needles show off waves of color and provide just the right amount of grip to make slick yarns manageable.

I chose a size 9 needle and a 24″ cord.

Size and Gauge

Hobby Lobby yarn is an Aran weight yarn so using a size 9 needle will yield a stroller sized blanket, about 22″ x 26″.

I prefer knitting small stroller sized blankets for new baby gifts because new parents bundle them up in their carseats, wrap the blanket around them, and then do not have to deal with a coat.  Even in the summer these small blankets are very useful when in and out of air conditioning.
