How to Knit a Cuddly Soft Baby Blanket

Would you like to learn how to knit a cuddly soft baby blanket?  If you can knit, purl, YO and k2tog, this pattern will be so easy for you.  It’s written in 14 row repeats.  You can tell where you are just by looking at the blanket so it’s easy to take with you everywhere you go.  Because if you are a knitter, that’s what you do, right?

Sometimes, like this time, I knit the blanket in all one color.  Other times I switch colors every 14 rows.  That is a fun stashbuster and the blankets that turn out are so pretty!

Here is the one I just knit in Hobby Lobby’s Medium Blue I Love This Yarn.  I actually do love that yarn.  It goes in the washer and the dryer over and over and just gets softer, never pilly.

Yarn Recommendations

This blanket was knit with Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn.  It’s acrylic but very durable and super soft.  It comes in a gazillion colors and is inexpensive.  2 skeins of yarn makes a stroller sized blanket and a matching hat.

Another yarn that I absolutely love for baby blankets is Lion Brand’s Ice Cream Yarn.  It’s machine wash and dry on the hottest settings.  It’s a lighter weight than the Hobby Lobby Yarn so your blanket will be more airy and light.  You will need a smaller needle and cast on more stitches to make it wide enough.  2 skeins of the Ice Cream Yarn will make a stroller sized blanket like this one.  Watch the color changes – so pretty and soft, like magic!

blue and white striped yarnHere is an approximate yardage chart for the worsted weight yarn:

• Stroller: 400 yards total for 22 x 28
• Baby: 700 yards total for 28 x 34
• Small: 1000 yards total for 34 x 40
• Medium: 1300 yards total for 36 x 46
• Large: 1600 yards total for 42 x 52

If you want to use the lighter weight yarn, no problem!  Here is the trick:  Just go up one size on the chart here and use the needles recommended on the skein of yarn.  So if you want a small sized baby blanket in the Ice Cream Yarn, Simply use the size 6 needles recommended by Lion Brand but follow the instructions for the medium blanket.  The beauty of this is that you really can’t go wrong!  Blankets do not have to fit – they just have to be cozy and cuddly and cute!

And finally, I have to highly recommend Etsy.  They have hundreds of sellers who sell well known store brands but also dye their own yarn and make the most beautiful skeins of yarn!  Here a few that are best sellers on Etsy that I highly recommend:

Needle Recommendations

I always always always recommend Knit Picks Needles.   These are the Mosaic Options Needles that I just love.  The wood is warm in my hands and the joins are smooth.

Here is the basics of how you knit it:

Cast on 100 stitches with a size 8 needle for the stroller sized blanket.

Knit 12 rows.

For the body of the blanket, knit a 10 stitch border on each side.

The 14 row repeat goes like this:

Knit one row, Purl one row, Knit 2 rows.

Repeat that 2 more times

Next row: YO, k2tog

Next row: Knit

Repeat these rows until it’s as long as you want and then Knit a 12 row border.

That’s it!  For a polished row by row written out pattern:
