Knitting the Inside Out Hat and Cowl
Knitting the Inside Out hat
My goal lately has been to knit warm, lined hats for my grandchildren. I wouldn’t mind one for myself as well! Add a neckwarmer and the kids will stay warm for sure!
What is fun about this set is that the outside of the hat and cowl are Patriots colors and the inside of the hat is Celtics colors! My Boston family just loves this.
In this post I will show you how I knit a hat that is reversible and double warm. It’s a bit tricky, I’ll admit, because I started the hat by using the double knitting technique in the round. This is not the easiest technique and there are several youtube videos that will show you how to do this. I do love learning new things and double knitting is one of them.
For the cowl I repeated the same techniques that I used with the hat by beginning with double knitting, then separating the layers.
The hat and the cowl are the same dimensions, roughly square. The above project was knit in child size and was 16″ in circumference and 8″ tall for both hat and cowl.

After 6 rows, I separated the stitches and put the inside layer on a piece of scrap yarn. I then began to knit the outside of the hat with 3 rows of gray, 2 rows of blue and 1 row of gray. Then I began knitting with the red until the hat measured 7.5 [8, 9] inches

Cut yarn leaving a 10″ tail
Thread yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight. Secure stitches and weave in ends.
Next:
Put the yellow stitches of the inside hat on the needles and begin to knit with green.
Finish the hat the same way you did the outside hat.
When you are finished simply turn the one hat inside the other. Or turn it inside out. You can wear whichever side suits you for that day and also rest assured that it is double thick and very warm!

After 6 rows, I separated the stitches and put the inside layer on a piece of scrap yarn. I then began to knit the outside of the hat with blue until the cowl was 8″ long. I then bound off.
Next: thread your needles through the scrap yarn on the inside layer and discard the scrap yarn. Continue knitting until the cowl is 8″ long. Then join the bound of layer with the live stitches on the inside of the cowl using this technique:
Try to do this loosely so that the cowl isn’t too tight at the top.
Wash and block the hat and cowl to size.
