Using a variegated yarn mixed with a white yarn, this hat’s hearts change colors. Such a fun effect! The matching cowl is squishy and warm and just zips along. It’s a quick and easy pattern and the best part is… it’s free!

Yarn
White yarn → Berocco Vintage Chunky White
Variegated Yarn → Zen Garden Serenity Chunky in Frilly Fiji
Berocco Chunky → Knit a Double Brim in gray held double with Rowan Cashmere Haze for a super soft and warm brim. Body of hat made with Pink and White Berocco Chunky
Pattern for Hat
Assuming Chunky weight yarn, 4″ = 16 stitches: Gauge is important! Swatch first or it may not fit.
For sizes child/teen/adult and size 9 needles, cast-on 64/80/88 stitches. Place marker and join in the round.
Knit for 2 1/2 inches and then changed to white.
Knit 2 rows.
3rd Row: k3 white, k1 orange, continue for the rest of the round
Rows 4 and 5: knit 2 rows with white
Row 6: knit 1 white, knit 1 orange, then for the rest of the round knit 3 white, knit 1 orange
Repeat Rows 4, 5 and 6 until hat is 8 1/2″ long
Then: k2tog

k2tog
Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends.
Shape Crown
Note: Change to double pointed needles when there are no longer enough stitches to work on circular needle.
Decrease Round: K8/9, K2tog
Straight round: K
Decrease Round: K7/8 K2tog
Straight round: K
Continue decreasing every other round in this manner until 8 stitches remain. Pull tail through remaining stitches to secure and weave in all ends.

Pattern for Cowl:
With size 9 needles cast on 71 stitches and join in the round.
k3, p3 around until 8” long.
Bind off and weave in ends.
