Today is Inauguration Day, January 20, 2021. Here is a subtle take on American Patriotism and for celebration of American democracy.
This stars and stripes hat and cowl set has been knit in a toddler size but may easily be adjusted for adult sizes too.

Needles
Knitpicks Caspian Options Short Interchangeable Circular Set
Size 9 needles with a 16″ cord and a gauge of 16 stitches per 4 inches. Check your gauge!
Pattern
The Stars and Stripes Hat
Be sure to check your gauge!
The gauge for this hat is 4 stitches per 1″ or 16 stitches per 4″.
With size 9 needles:
For baby/ toddler/ kid/ small/ medium/ large:
Cast on: 48/ 56/ 64/ 72/ 80/ 88
Join for knitting in the round.
Knit 12 rows with tan.
Purl 1 row.
Knit 2 rows.
Change to Red and knit 1 row
Change to Blue and knit 1 row
Change to Tan and knit 1 row
Continue changing rows in this manner 2 more times.
Knit one row red
Join the Lining of the Brim
Pick up stitches from the original cast on edge with another same size circular needle. Fold lining and brim together. Join the cast on edge to the live stitches by knitting one stitch off of each of the two left needles.
Continue knitting until hat measure 6″ (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9)
Begin decreases:
K2tog, K * repeat
Knit
K2tog, K * repeat
Knit
K2tog, *repeat
K2tog, *repeat
Cut yarn and using a tapestry needle, thread through the live stitches and pull tight. Secure.

The gauge for this cowl is 4 stitches per 1″ or 16 stitches per 4″.
With size 9 needles:
For baby/ toddler/ kid/ small/ medium/ large:
Cast on: 48/ 56/ 64/ 72/ 80/ 88
Join for knitting in the round.
With Red, Knit the Brim:
K1, P1 for 6 rows.
Knit 1 row in Red
Change to Tan and knit 4 rows.
Next row: K1 tan, Knit 1 blue to the end of the round.
Next row: K1 red, Knit 1 tan to the end of the round.
Knit 4 rows tan.
Next row: K1 blue, k1 red to the end of the round.
Next row: K1 red, k1 blue to the end of the round.
Knit 4 rows tan.
Next row: K1 tan, Knit 1 blue to the end of the round.
Next row: K1 red, Knit 1 tan to the end of the round.
Knit 4 rows tan.
At this point, depending on the size you want, you may want to repeat the K1 Red, K1 Blue rows. Repeat as needed to reach the length of the cowl that you want.
Then: Knit 1 red
Next 6 rows: K1, P1
Bind Off.
