Needles
When it comes to selecting the perfect needles for your baby blanket project, there are a few key factors to consider. The size of the needles will impact the overall look and feel of your blanket, with larger needles creating looser, more breathable fabric and smaller needles producing tighter, warmer fabric. Additionally, the type of needles you choose – whether they are made of bamboo, metal, or plastic – will affect the speed and ease of your knitting process. Experiment with different needle sizes and materials to find what works best for you and your project. Once you have your needles selected, you’ll be well on your way to creating a cozy and beautiful baby blanket.
For this project I chose Knitpicks: Reflections Options Interchangeable Circular Set
I use US8 needles with this yarn, which is recommended on the sleeve of this particular yarn.

Yarn
One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is choosing the right yarn. The yarn you select will not only determine the look and feel of the blanket but also how easy or challenging the knitting process will be.
When choosing yarn for a baby blanket, it’s important to consider factors such as softness, durability, and washability. Opt for a yarn that is gentle on sensitive baby skin, such as a soft cotton or a soft acrylic blend. Additionally, selecting a machine washable yarn will make caring for the blanket much easier for busy parents.
Another important consideration when choosing yarn is the weight or thickness of the yarn. For a cozy baby blanket, a medium-weight yarn, also known as worsted weight, is a popular choice as it provides a nice balance between warmth and breathability.
For this project I chose a worsted yarn from Hobby Lobby called “I Love This Yarn” in the colorway “Metallic Coral”.
How much yarn should I buy?
Using worsted or aran weight yarn and assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:
(estimates are approximate)
- Stroller: 400 yards for 22 x 28
- Baby: 700 yards for 28 x 36
- Small: 1000 yards for 34 x 40
- Medium: 1300 yards for 36 x 46
- Large: 1600 yards 42 x 50
