Needles
To create the perfect Crosswise Baby Blanket, you’ll need the right set of knitting needles. The great news is that this project is designed specifically with beginners in mind, so don’t worry if you’re still perfecting your knitting technique. The size of the needles recommended for this pattern will help you build your skills as you progress through each row, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident every step of the way.
When it comes to knitting needles, there are various options available, including straight, circular, and double-pointed needles. For the Crosswise Baby Blanket, circular needles are the way to go. The work sits on the cable so there is little danger of the project falling off.
The recommended needle size for this pattern is typically US 8 (5mm) for worsted weight yarn. However, it’s always a good idea to check the specific recommended needles on the label of the yarn. This pattern can be knit in DK and chunky yarn as well, so needle size will depend on what yarn you buy. The project shown is in worsted weight yarn. So please keep in mind that needle sizes can affect the overall outcome of your project, such as the size of the stitches and the drape of the blanket.
My favorite needles for the Crosswise:
Knitpicks: Mosaic Options Interchangeable Circular Needles
Size US8 with a 24″ or 32″ cord and a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches
Knitpicks says it best: Combining Radiant’s bright, bold and warm boisterousness, the sea-inspired colors of Caspian’s oceanic hues, and the luxurious jewel tones of dignified Majestic, Mosaic gives you the usual strong and smooth layers of laminated birch in every color you could want. And the distinct sequence of colors will make finding the right needle size easier than ever.

Now that you’ve got your knitting needles ready, it’s time to dive into the exciting world of yarn. In the next section, we’ll explore the type of yarn best suited for this project and how it contributes to the overall beauty and functionality of the Crosswise Baby Blanket.
Yarn
Now that you’ve got your knitting needles ready, it’s time to dive into the exciting world of yarn. In order to create a beautiful and functional Crosswise Baby Blanket, selecting the right type of yarn is crucial. The yarn you choose will not only affect the final appearance of your project but also its durability and comfort. Let’s take a closer look at the yarn best suited for this particular knitting endeavor.
When it comes to choosing yarn for a baby blanket, it’s important to prioritize softness and coziness. After all, you want your little one to feel snug and comfortable when wrapped up in their blanket.
In addition to softness, you’ll also want to consider the weight or thickness of the yarn. A worsted weight yarn is ideal for this project as it will allow you to create a warm and substantial blanket without spending countless hours knitting. This weight of yarn also lends itself well to the garter stitch pattern that you will be mastering in the next section, allowing the stitches to stand out beautifully.
Another factor to keep in mind when selecting yarn is its washability. Baby blankets are bound to encounter spills and messes, so choosing a yarn that can be easily washed and cared for is essential. Look for yarn that is labeled as machine washable, ensuring that your hard work can withstand the test of time and stay fresh and clean for your little one.
Project is shown with Hobby Lobby’s Worsted/Aran Weight I Love This yarn in lots of scrappy colors left over from blankets that I have been knitting over the past several months.
How much yarn do I need?
Assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:
- Stroller: 400 yards for 24 x 24
- Baby: 700 yards for 30 x 30
- Small: 1000 yards for 36 x 36
- Medium: 1300 yards for 42 x 42
- Large: 1600 yards 48 x 48

Creating a Beautiful Color Gradient
Now you are now ready to move on to the next exciting step: creating a beautiful color gradient. By blending different shades of yarn, you can achieve a stunning colorful effect that will make your baby blanket truly one-of-a-kind. So let’s dive in and explore the art of color blending in the next section.
Creating a beautiful color gradient is all about selecting the combination of yarn colors and arranging them in a strategic sequence. Start by choosing a base color for your baby blanket – this will be the color that appears most prominently. Once you have your base color, select a few additional shades that complement it. You may want to aim for a gradient effect by choosing colors that gradually transition from lighter to darker or vice versa.
Another approach is to work with self-striping yarn that already includes a range of colors in a gradient pattern. This can save you time and effort as the yarn does the work for you. Alternatively, you can create your own color gradient by using multiple strands of yarn or by switching yarn colors at specific intervals. Experiment with different techniques to achieve the desired effect.
In many of my Crosswise Baby Blankets I simply use up the scraps that I keep in a basket, all leftovers from previous projects. This is not an exact science and each blanket is unique.
