Lining the Winter Trails Beanie

handknit blue hat with gray brim

Lining the Winter Trails Beanie

When I knit this beanie I cast on 88 stitches with a size 7 needle.  I can be a very loose knitter and it ended up way too big for my husband to wear.  It matched his new coat perfectly so I really wanted to salvage it.  So I decided to try my hand at lining it.

Pattern

Knitting the Winter Trails Beanie

For sizes kid/ small adult/ large adult
A note about gauge:  This pattern is written for a gauge of 3.75 stitches per inch.  Be sure you check the yarn you are using for gauge.  You may have to go up or down needle sizes to get this gauge otherwise the hat will be too big.
For this project with the Cascade Worsted Weight Yarn:

With size 7 needles cast on 72/80/88 stitches
Join for knitting in the round.

Brim

For this brim you will need to know how to K1tbl and Purl.

K1tbl = knit 1 stitch through the back loop

To knit a stitch through the back loop, insert the right needle into the back of the stitch and then knit it. This twists the stitch.

Row 1: [K1tbl, P1] Repeat til end of round.

Knit for 2 inches for the brim.

Body of hat

[K6, P2]* and repeat til the end of round

Continue until the body of the hat (not including the brim) measures 5/6/7 inches for a hat that measures 8/9/9.5″ long

Begin Decreases

Row 1: [K6, K2tog] til the end of round

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: [K5, K2tog] til the end of round

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: [K4, K2tog] til the end of round

Row 6: Knit

Row 7: [K3, K2tog] til the end of round

Row 8: Knit

Row 9: [K2tog] til the end of round

Cut yarn leaving a 10″ tail

Thread yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight.  Secure stitches and weave in ends.

Wash and block.

Pompom – Optional but fun

My faux fur pompoms come from Etsy.

It is also fun to make your own yarn pompoms.  I like to use the Knitpicks Clover Pompom Maker.   For help use this guide.

After knitting frantically the day before Christmas I finished the Winter Trails Beanie for my husband to match his new coat that was wrapped up and waiting for Christmas morning. In the meantime here in Buffalo the storm of the century arrived, snowing for days with hurricane force winds. We were the lucky ones… inside with food and warmth and of course I had my knitting. Once the storm passed it took a couple days to dig out. In the meantime… the beanie didn’t fit! It would fall off or blow off. So I took a dollar store hat that I had for just this situation. I stuck it inside the Winter Trails hat and slip stitched them together. Problem solved! I may do this with all my beanies from now on. It made for such a warm hat!
