Size 9 Circular Needles for the hat and size 6 for the booties. I like to knit the booties tightly so they stay on.
The needles I am using for this project are my absolute favorite for hat knitting. They are the Knitpicks Caspian Options Short Interchangeable Circular Set. With small tips and 16″ cords I can knit baby hats in the round.
Gauge is 4 stitches per inch for a 12″ round newborn hat.
With size 9 needles cast on 48 stitches
Knit 6 rows and then join in the round. (The open seam will be sewn up at the end). This helps prevent rolling.
Knit until the hat reaches 4″ and begin decreases.

Cut yarn and pull through stitches tightly and weave through on wrong side. Go back and close up the seam on the brim.
Optional:
Crochet a border. This adds a ton of fun to the look of the hat don’t you think? It’s worth a try… it’s easy and fun, trust me. Here is a book that explains how to do the simplest border.
Knit the flower. The pattern is here on Ravelry by the Createry Shop.
