red hat with red/grey striped brim hanging on hook

The Carousel Beanie reminds me of those childrens amusement park carousels with it’s stripes that go up and down and round and round.

I am currently obsessed with double brim hats.  Trying to find a brim that is warm, stretchy and cute has been a challenge.  This brim is super warm because of the slip stitches, but is not super stretchy so it needs to fit exactly.

Here are the basics of how I knit this hat:

I am a loose knitter so I used size 7 needles with this chunky yarn. Most would use a size 9 or 10.  Be sure to check your gauge!

For baby/ toddler/ kid/ teen/ women/ men:

Multiply your stitches per inch by 12 (14,16,18, 20, 22) and that’s how many stitches to cast on for your hat.

For this hat, I was knitting for a kid size hat.  I swatched and with size 7 needles, I knit 4.5 stitches per inch.  So in this case I cast on 72 stitches (4.5 X 16).

Join for knitting in the round.

Knit 7 rows.

Begin slip stitch pattern:

Row 1: with coordinating color, knit 1, slip 1* around
Row 2: with main color, slip 1, knit 1 * around

Continue for a total of 5″ from cast on edge.

Join the Lining of the Brim

Pick up stitches from the original cast on edge with another same size circular needle.  Fold lining and brim together.  Join the cast on edge to the live stitches by knitting one stitch off of each of the two left needles.

Continue knitting until hat measure 6″ (7, 7.5, 7.5, 8, 8.5)

Begin decreases:

Continue until 10 stitches left on the needles.  Cut yarn and using a tapestry needle, thread through the live stitches and pull tight.  Secure.

Pompom – Optional but fun

If you like a faux fur pompom try here:  Etsy: faux fur pompoms.  They come in different sizes, are beautifully made and less expensive than other Etsy shops! It is also fun to make your own yarn pompoms.  I like to use the Knitpicks Clover Pompom Maker.   For help use this guide.
