Looks Like Plaid Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

I love making this stroller sized plaid baby blanket knitting pattern because it is so easy and in the end the baby blanket looks like plaid!

You can use any DK, worsted or aran weight yarn.  Choose 4 colors from your stash and the best part is, you can use up leftover skeins of yarn.  What a great stashbuster this pattern is!

Because the colors run horizontally and the purl stitches appear to run vertically, this blanket looked like a plaid blanket when it was finished.

Yarn

Project shown with approximately 400 yards of Hobby Lobby’s Aran Weight I Love This Yarn in Light Peach, Medium Blue, Ocean and Linen.

How much yarn should I buy?

Using worsted or aran weight yarn and assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:

(estimates are approximate)

  • Stroller: 400 yards for 22 x 28
  • Baby: 700 yards for 28 x 36
  • Small: 1000 yards for 34 x 40
  • Medium: 1300 yards for 36 x 46
  • Large: 1600 yards 42 x 50

Pattern

A note about gauge:  Using size 8 needles gauge is usually 18 stitches for 4″.  Gauge is not important in knitting a baby blanket.  Depending on your tension, yarn used and needle sizes, this blanket may turn out larger or smaller.

With Size 8 needles:

For Stroller (Baby, Small, Medium, Large)

Cast on 92 (104, 116, 128, 140) stitches. Knit in garter stitch for 12 (12, 14, 16, 16, 18) rows.

Row 1: Knit across

Row 2: K6, P8, *K4, P8*, repeat * until 6 stitches remain. Knit 6.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until it is as long as you want.

Knit 12 rows in garter stitch and bind off using the stretchy method:

Stretchy Method of Binding Off

After you finish the blanket, wrap it up with a Dock-A-Tot and really thrill a new mama!

Here is another variation of this blanket:

Every 2 inches, knit 2 rows of one color, then 2 inches of another.

Continue with 2 rows of one color, switching colors as you please.
