Magic Loop Method
The Magic Loop Method is the easiest way in my opinion to knit in the round for small projects. Here is a great little book that explains how to do it.
Pattern
Size 2 needles, using Magic Loop Method:
Cast on 40 stitches.
K3, P1 pattern for a nice stretchy, squishy cuff for a few inches as desired.
Switch to stockinette for a couple inches.
Begin Thumb shaping:
Row 1: Knit 2, KFB, place marker. Knit to the last 3 stiches, place marker. KFB, K2.
Row 2: Knit around plain.
Row 3: Knit to the last stitch before the first marker, KFB, PM. Knit to the 2nd marker, KFB, Knit to the end.
Row 4: Knit around plain.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until there are 10 stitches before the first marker and after the 2nd marker. On the last knit plain row, Knit to the 2nd marker, K3, BO 14 stitches, K3, remove markers. Knit around plain until you get to the desired length.
Final rib pattern:

Row 2: knit
Row 3: k1, p1
Row 4: knit
Bind off.
