These socks were knitted with Opal X-large worsted weight yarn. I used size 2 needles and the stitches were quite dense. The way I cast on the toe made it bumpy. I used a long tail cast on and simply knit one stitch on needle #1 and the 2nd stitch on needle #2 until I had cast on 16 stitches. It just didn’t work well because of the bumpy toe. Next time I will try Judy’s magic cast on. I used an afterthought heel and really liked it! I knit with magic loop so when I got to the heel I didn’t use scrap yarn… I simply kept half the live stitches on a stitch holder and then cast on more stitches to finish the sock. When I went back to the heel the live stitches went on one needle and then I picked up the other half of the stitches and knitted the heel, closing with kitchener. It seemed easy and fast, too.
For the cuff I used a larger DPN to bind off. It worked in the sense that the sock is easy to pull on and does stay up, but the stitches look messy. I am going to try the stretchy bind off next.
The socks were scratchy but when I washed them they were so soft! I will definitely use Opal yarn again.
They are Laurie’s October edition of her personal Mom’s Knitted Sock of the Month Club.
