Baby Girl Sweater Knit Pattern

Here is a great St. Patricks day, Easter Day, or just any old day where you want to knit a baby sweater knitting pattern that is shown here in size 12 months.  Because I used green yarn I am calling it a St. Patrick’s Day sweater.  But this sweater would be gorgeous in any color!

This is the Luca by Emily Nora O’Neil.

I knit this cute sweater for my granddaughter’s first St. Patrick’s Day in size 12 months.

It’s a clearly written pattern and is rated easy by ravelers, but intermediate by the designer.  Made with Berroco Yarn, this sweet baby sweater is so soft and just gets even softer with washing.

Pattern Review

I really enjoyed knitting this pattern. It is written for size 3 months through 18 months and is rated by the designer as an intermediate level knitting project.

This is a pattern that is written from the bottom up.  First the back is knit and then the front.   The pattern requires straight needles, but I used circular needles like straight needles, never joining in the round.

Once the lace is completed, the shoulder seams are sewn.  One side has a buttonhole band.  Stitches are picked up for the sleeves which are added last.  The buttons at the shoulder make the sweater nice and easy to put on and take off a baby.

This pattern is correctly labeled an intermediate pattern.  When reading the directions, taking each section step by step, the instructions are well written.  It is not complicated but a bit hefty for a beginner knitter.

Yarn

Berroco Comfort Yarn is super soft and wonderfully comfortable to knit with and to wear! Comfort features super fine acrylic and super fine nylon which are spun together into a luxurious twist.

This yarn is 210 yards and perfect for all projects from sweaters to blankets it’s especially perfect for baby sweaters!

The pattern calls for 2 balls (100 grs) of Berroco Comfort Yarn.

This wonderful yarn is available on Etsy.

Needles

You will need a 16″ circular knitting needle with size 8 tips.

I use these Knitpicks needles for baby knits.  Have you tried these ‘shorties’ yet?  They have small tips which make knitting sleeves and smaller projects like the body of the sweater in the round so much easier.  They are called the Knitpicks Options Short Interchangeable Needles.

Magic Loop

The pattern calls for knitting the sleeves straight but I prefer the magic loop method.  For that I needed a 32″ cord so I used these wonderful needles – Knitpicks Options Interchangeable Needles.

Additional Supplies Needed

  • Three 1/2″ buttons
  • Safety pin
  • 2 stitch markers

Blocking

After I am done with knitting my baby knits, I like to give them a little soak in Eucalan.  Simply mix a capful in some warm water and give the hat a little bath.  After 15 minutes or so, remove the hat and roll up in a towel.  Unroll it and pin to a blocking mat.  I always feel like blocking my knits is like a little reward for the yarn for doing such a nice job 💕

I recommend buying enough yarn for a matching hat!  The Boston Kid Beanie comes in baby sizes too.

It is a fun pattern to make and who loves St. Patrick’s Day more than a Boston kid?
