The Starlight Hat Knitting Pattern
The Starlight Hat Knitting Pattern is a beginner fair isle knit hat pattern made with any worsted weight yarn. The sample here is made with squishy and soft Woolfolk 100% Merino yarn.
Starlight Hat Pattern is available on Ravelry
Instructions are written for size baby through adult. All designs are charted.
The hat should be fairly easy for an adventurous beginner fair isle knitter. The instructions have charts 12 stitches wide. Each increment of 12 stitches equals about 1.5 inches of circumference.
Fair Isle knitting can often be tighter and therefore it is important that the knitter know their gauge.
This beginner fair isle knit hat pattern is fun to knit and a great introduction to this wonderful knitting technique!
Needles
I started out with Knitpicks Interchangeable short needles, 16″ cord, size 8. I feel that the short tips are easier to use than standard tips when knitting hats on a 16″ cord.
Other yarn choices to consider for this hat:
- Woolfolk Far Yarn a hand wash, 100% merino wool handwash heavy worsted yarn. It’s an expensive, luxurious yarn.
- City Tweed Aran on Knitpicks made with Merino Wool and Alpaca
- Berroco Yarn on Etsy – a relatively inexpensive wonderful soft yarn
I recommend buying 4 skeins of 4 different colors, using small amounts of each skein so that in the end you will be able to knit 4 hats.
This hat also looks adorable with a pompom!
I would suggest either going to KitchenKlutter on Etsy to look at her super awesome and inexpensive faux pompoms:
(pictured with the pompoms is the Cuddly Soft Baby Blanket Pattern)
Or make your own with the Clover Pompom maker available on Knitpicks
The Starlight Hat can be worn all winter long.
If you have never tried fair isle knitting this would be a great project to begin. I know I love making designs with my knitting and I think you might too!
