Yarn
Before diving into knitting your baby blanket, it’s important to gather all the necessary materials. First, choose a soft and comfortable yarn suitable for babies. You may want to go for a natural fiber such as cotton or wool, or opt for a synthetic blend that’s easy to care for. Consider the weight and thickness of the yarn as well, as this will determine the overall look and feel of the finished product.
This Tiny Kisses baby blanket is knit with Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn Prints” in Pastels
How much yarn should I buy?
Assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:
- Stroller: 400 yards for 22 x 28
- Baby: 700 yards for 28 x 36
- Small: 1000 yards for 34 x 40
- Medium: 1300 yards for 36 x 46
- Large: 1600 yards 42 x 50
The question often comes up…. can this blanket be knit with DK or chunky yarn! The answer is YES! Simply use the recommended needle size for the yarn and then cast on more stitches for the DK yarn (go up a size or 2) or fewer stitches for the chunky yarn. The blanket may end up smaller or larger than you expected but what difference does it make? Unlike many knitted goods, baby blankets do not have to ‘fit’!

Needles
Once you have your yarn, you’ll need knitting needles in an appropriate size for your chosen yarn weight. Make sure they are comfortable to hold and easy to work with for extended periods of time. You may also want to invest in a pair of stitch markers to help keep track of your progress and prevent mistakes.
For my blankets I often recommend Knit Picks Needles. These are the Knitpicks: Sunstruck Options Interchangeable Circular Set that I just love. The wood is warm in my hands and the joins are smooth.
Pattern
As you work through the pattern, make sure to check your stitch count and gauge regularly to ensure that your blanket will turn out the correct size. If you do make a mistake, don’t panic! Most mistakes can be fixed by undoing a few rows and redoing them correctly.
