Yarn
Knitpicks Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky
Spun from Peruvian wool, the strong fiber has an excellent balance of structure, loft, and drape that serves a wide variety of uses. Wonderfully warm for all weather, this sturdy, all-purpose yarn has excellent stitch definition and heirloom durability.
This project is knit in one skein of the colorway Oyster Heather.
Needles
Knitpicks Caspian Options Short Interchangeable Circular Set
Size US9 and US11 needles with a 16″ cord and a gauge of 3.75 stitches per inch for the size 9 needles and 3 stitches per inch for the size 11 needles. Check your gauge!
Pattern
Knitting the Winter Trails Beanie
With size 9 needles cast on 72/80/88 stitches
Join for knitting in the round.
Brim
For this brim you will need to know how to K1tbl and Purl.
K1tbl = knit 1 stitch through the back loop
To knit a stitch through the back loop, insert the right needle into the back of the stitch and then knit it. This twists the stitch.
Row 1: [K1tbl, P1] Repeat til end of round.
Continue this until the brim measures 4″.
Body of hat
Change to size 11 needles
[K6, P2]* and repeat til the end of round
Continue until the body of the hat (not including the brim) measures 5/6/7 inches for a hat that measures 8/9/10 ” long
Begin Decreases
Row 1: [K4, K2tog] til the end of round
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: [K3, K2tog] til the end of round
Row 4: Knit
Row 5: [K2, K2tog] til the end of round
Row 6: Knit
Row 7: [K1, K2tog] til the end of round
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: [K2tog] til the end of round
Cut yarn leaving a 10″ tail
Thread yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight. Secure stitches and weave in ends.
Fold up the brim to measure 2″.
Wash and block.
